MusicRadar verdict: The Erebus V3 is a powerful, well-specifi ed and flexible synth, capable of both conventional and more experimental tones. For everything else, the Nyx is really great and interesting. Overall, the Erebus V3 is an excellent synthesiser with real scope for in-depth sound creation. I find the Nyx v1 not the best Dreadbox offering for bass to be honest, not sure what it is, but it sounds thinner than the Erebus when I try to go for bass…could be the filter. To because you keep asking about the Nyx’s bass capabilities, see my comment above re Erebus vs Nyx for that. The Nyx is quite complex with all its routing capabilities and dual filter, and it is definitely NOT one big sweet spot, but once you get it, it’s a really amazing synth for atmospheres etc. I think you can’t go wrong with either (v1/v2). I find those Dreadbox synths to be really amazing value for money, such great sound and well thought-out designs, they are really something. They are definitely in the same bracket - both semi-modular mono/duo/paraphonic synths. Me personally, I prefer the last gen sounds to each, Erebus and Nyx, which is why I didn’t upgrade them thus far. Gear showdown: Dreadbox Erebus V3 vs Behringer Neutron Alright. Not better or worse, just a little different. Over all everything feels looser on the Erebus (especially the tuning) though you can get a snappy envelope. The v1 had some quality control issues, but the Dreadbox crew is really helpful and fast to fix/replace faulty units.Īlso v1 and v2 don’t sound exactly the same. The Erebus is louder, the 2 pole filter isn't quite as versatile and doesn't have as wide of a sweet spot as the Typhon's 4 pole but it gets dirty and has a kind of wooly overblown vintage sound. The new gen Erebus and Nyx are SMT soldered (if you care for this sort of stuff). These two synths seem like they were made to be attached at the hip. Borrowing tricks from the EREBUS V3, Nyx V2 has an auto-tuning feature for its oscillators and there is an independent glide setting per oscillator for a wide. The Erebus V3 has a patch bay but its mostly a gimmick in that the CV inputs track pretty poorly (I wish they had just added more switches to be honest). I got the Nyx v2 as a gift and have since purchased the Erebus v3 and WOW DUDES this is amazing. I havent fallen in love with music gear like this since my darling guitars. What speaks for v1, is the form factor and the fact that those are still through-hole soldered. Update : I cant express enough how much the Nyx v2 has stolen my heart. Top row of support screens with old look Visual feedback by using LED ring buttons and indication of the value (on change or on click) Envelopes graphs handled by mouse or classical ADSR rotary encoders Load / Save programs from individual. Main selling point for the Nyx v2 are the additional patch points, better layout, the separate LFO controls, and the additional reverb controls. Dreadbox Erebus V3 interface with similar way of working as actual synthesizer.
